To build a fire

Jack London's "To Build a Fire" is a rather long story. I do however feel like i can relate to the cold man in the story. I relate the man in the story to a bad day i might have in my life. Seeing how i do not endure the trecherous cold or alot of other problems this man has, i do feel we can relate. I see a bad day like a fight with a parent or friend or a problem that might overcome me as the freezing cold in this mans life. The cold is something that you dont wish upon or want around, it just hits you and you must take it. This is resemblant to much drama in life. It is a sad even when one must keep their food wrapped under their shirt and coat just to keep it from freezing. This to me is like a goal i would like to accomplish in life. To reach the goal you must work and the road wont be easy but when finally their, the reward is endless. This i feel is similar to being starving, trudging through the ice and snow counting the seconds until you can devour your treat. The measure of cold is very bluntly given to us as the author states that "the spittle froze in the air". This is crazy to think that your saliva could freeze before hitting the ground. Aside from the terrible weather conditions, the man is alone, this is a sad feeling. To keep occupied, tobbacco is his choice. His beard turns to an amber trial as he cannot clear his mouth while spitting the tobbacco. The cold is so great that his mouth freezes in its shape. His body was tested and the weather was a bully. His feet were weary and his emotions were on the edge. This is a lfie changing event in ones life. This story shows how strong mother nature truly is and how such a disasterious thing can break a man and in general walk all over us.

An Episode of War

I feel Stephen Crane's short story truly gives out an accurate perception of life during this period of time. It is very real though as to relating to the wounds and injuries a solider would endure in the war. it is scary to think of the rapid rate at which men were going down and the commotion of the orderliers to scurry to help their men. Crane depicts the helplessness of the wounded as he states "the leiutenant, still holding his arm as if it were of glass, stood watching this battery untill all detail of it were lost". This must be devastating to the leiutenant seeing as he can do nothing but sit and watch. That feeling of being unable to do something is heartbreaking. I can almost feel the pain in the Soliders fear in loosing his arm. I too would disperse great concern if i were to possibly loose a limb. I feel that it is terrible to lie to the man , saying he wont have to have his arm amputated and that slicing it off on him. His life will change forever and the world as he knows it will impact him a great deal. He, after putting his life on the line, now wears his coat with one sleeve flat, it is truly a heart touching tale.

Nature

I feel that Ralph Waldo Emerson truly portrayed his feelings of life and the way we live through "Nature". His reference to god shows his views as a religious man and his peaceful yet smooth discriptions show us he is a sensual man. An example of his religious beliefs is when he states "i am part or parcel of god". Also Emerson claims that "in the woods, we return to reason and faith". To me, i believe this means that while surrounded by nothing but the woods and natural plains of life, we truly find the person we really are. Another good point made by Emerson is when he states "in the wilderness, i find something more dear and connate than in the streets or villages". I feel that this means only in the woods can you have such a connection with yourself and the world that you cant have any place else. Nature being so beautiful around you calms and sooths your sould to block out the bad and only recieve good. people are in their purest state and their minds are at ease in nature.
